One of Sabah’s biggest events this year is the 28th Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon held on October 18-19!
The origin of the event began in 1987, when Sabah Parks intended to create a rescue team to retrieve injured climbers, as this would have been the fastest response during bad weather conditions (rather than using helicopters). The following year, the operations evolved into a race, which became an international event with participants from all over the world!
On October 18th, participants of the Elite categories complete the summit race, which began at Kinabalu Park and finished in Kundasang town via Mesilau. The following day, categories of the adventure race are open to all climbers and starts at Kinabalu Park as well, however climbers ascend as far as Mount Kinabalu’s halfway point at Layang Layang.
The results show the incredible feat of the participants’ physical endurance, such as Dai Matsumoto’s winning time for the Elite (Men) category; finishing the summit race in 4 hours 11 minutes!
